Celebrities Who Were On The Dating Game Before They Were Famous

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s appearance on The Celebrity Dating Game was a mess. The men who were chosen as potential suitors for the star had no idea who she was, even when Zooey revealed her name to them. A chorus of “who” rang among them, and the star was anything but impressed.

Luckily, in February of 2021, ABC announced the reboot of The Dating Game more than five decades after the game show first aired to help some of our favorite celebrities find love. Once again Zooey Deschanel and Michael Bolton were on hand as hosts, helping the celebs grill the three contestants while Bolton’s musical workings gave clues to the contestants as to the celebrity’s identity. Lawrence appeared on Monday night’s show on ABC after recently separating from his wife of 15 years, while black-ish star Marcus Scribner also took his shot at love in the episode.

Once it came to making her final decision, Azalea chose to go out on a date with contestant number one, stage manager Adamski. Bolton also serves as an executive producer on the Sony Pictures Television series, which owns the Dating Game format, with Charles Wachter Christina Kline and Wendi Wan also producing. The original The Dating Game ran on ABC from 1965 to 1973. While most of us use apps like Tinder to connect with potential partners, celebrities need love too.

It’s one of the strangest episodes of television I’ve ever watched. For the second episode of the show, Zooey Deschanel guided Iggy and Carson through various rounds. Their suitors did not know which celebrity they were going to be matched with, and Michael Bolton sang about each celebrity with an original song about them. Carson Kressley had to choose between a single dad Jansen Schamp, accountant Steven Martinez, and assistant dean Chuck Stanley.

Maybe just sit it out and wait for the Michael Bolton Describes C-List Celebrities In Song album instead. However, The Celebrity Dating Game does benefit from one legitimately strange format quirk. Remember I said that Michael Bolton is the co-host? What that means in reality is that, for the bulk of each episode, he sits silently next to a grand piano. He might offer the odd bizarre and apparently off-the-cuff response – when a guest asks how he is, he shrugs “I’m busy with this” – but for the most part he is simply set dressing.

The woman would “judge” the men and make the decision on who she wanted to go on a date with based only on the answers they gave. Of course, the men wanted to win a date with the woman, whoever she was, so some of the answers got a little racy. One of the best parts of the original was “the date” – you are being whisked away to the fabulous blah blah restaurant etc. How quick can we go to commercial after the person is picked by the celeb? Oh and the kiss – don’t get me started in the “blowing” the kiss.

This show might have worked in the 70s or 80s when it was on but they are just redoing it with that cheesey style in the 21st century. You could’ve tried to reinvent the show with a current aesthetic but this repeat from 30 or 40 years ago just ain’t right. I couldn’t finish watching more than 2 episodes. Margaret Cho, an alleged comic and actress is a tired, worn out looking 52 yr old woman who got to choose between two white guys and a black girl.

Can the New ‘Celebrity Dating Game’ One Up the Original’s (Now) Famous Guest Stars?

For the first season of the 1996 revival, a different format was used. A notable change was that the prospective bachelor/bachelorette knew the first names of the three contestants at all times. Generally, the bachelorette would ask questions, written in advance on cards, to each of the three hidden bachelors.
